Federal Grant Deadlines Approaching: 

The International and Foreign Language Education (IFLE) office of the U.S. Department of Education is now accepting applications for the following fiscal year (FY) 2024 Fulbright-Hays and Title VI grant and fellowship competitions. 

• Fulbright-Hays Doctoral Dissertation Research Abroad (DDRA) Fellowships
  Deadline to apply: March 29, 2024. The DDRA Fellowships program provides opportunities for doctoral candidates to engage in full-time dissertation research abroad....especially in area studies not generally included in U.S. curricula...for a period of 6 to 12 months. IFLE expects to make 90 new awards totaling approximately $3.2 million under the FY 2024 DDRA program competition. The application is now available: G6 system.

• Fulbright-Hays Faculty Research Abroad (FRA) Fellowships
  Deadline to apply: April 23, 2024. The FRA Fellowships program ....is designed to deepen research knowledge and increase the study of modern foreign languages, cultural engagement, and area studies not generally included in U.S. curricula. It is for faculty for a period of  3 to 12 months. IFLE expects to make 25 new awards totaling approximately $750,000 under the FY 2024 FRA program competition. • Title VI American Overseas Research Centers (AORC) Program
  Deadline to apply: March 26, 2024. The AORC program provides grants to consortia of U.S. institutions of higher education to establish or operate overseas research Centers that promote postgraduate research, exchanges, and area studies. Eligible applicant Centers must have a permanent presence in the host country or region ....allowable activities may include, but are not limited to, modern foreign language training to strengthen the language proficiency of researchers and project participants, scholarly conferences on topics related to the Center’s area studies focus, and the publication and dissemination of information for the academic community and the public. IFLE expects to make 17 new awards totaling approximately $1.3 million for the FY 2024 AORC competition. The application is now available at Grants.gov.

Eugepae! A group of NYC high school students passionate about Latin, Greek, and the Classics are hosting the second annual Classics Continuum, a celebration of the field designed to bring like-minded high school students together and simultaneously engage new audiences. It will take place Saturday April 27 at 11am EST on Zoom.  They are soliciting submissions for student presenters at this year’s conference presentations that address this year’s theme: Cultural Constellations: Mapping the Influence of the Classics in Today's Society. Does your district have a JROTC or military-related connection? The DoDEA  reminds language program admin to apply for program expansion grants. These WLARA grants were spearheaded by the JNCL-NCLIS at which the National Committee for Latin and Greek holds a legacy board member role.

75% of grants go to strategic languages but 25% can cover any language in the district! ($500K - 2M) 

The World Language Advancement and Readiness Act Grants Program (WLARP) is now accepting applications for FY24! The deadline to apply is March 29, 2024. Many of us know how much study abroad has changed our interest into a passion for studying Greece and Rome. And it often has a huge impact on one's teaching, both method and content.

ASCSA  Announces NUMEROUS Fellowship and Scholarship opportunities for the coming year, some especially for underrepresented applicants.

ASCSA announces 2024 William Sanders Scarborough Fellowships. Apply with an online application here by Jan. 15! Open to graduate students, faculty members (K-12 & all levels of post-secondary education), and independent scholars residing in the United States or Canada (regardless of citizenship) whose geographic origin, diverse experiences, and socio-economic background are underrepresented at the School (incl. persons from the Black, Indigenous, and Persons of Color communities). The fellowship is designed for such applicants whose studies, research, or teaching would benefit from up to 3 mo. residency at the School. Fellowship recipients need not be specialists in the field of Classical Studies. The School welcomes applicants from faculty of K-12 schools and from students or faculty from public and private universities, colleges, and community colleges; and encourages applications from Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

ASCSA: The American School of Classical Studies at Athens conducts a program volunteers wishing to participate in the archaeological excavations of the Athenian Agora during summer 2024. Approximately fifteen to twenty-five volunteers are chosen on the basis of academic qualifications and previous archaeological field experience. Both advanced undergraduate students and graduate students are eligible, although priority is given to graduate students preparing for careers in classical archaeology. Open to all nationalities DEADLINE: Dec. 9.

National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowships has Deadline: October 31, 2023. Postdoctoral scholars and professionals in all fields relevant to the mission of the ASCSA who are US citizens, or foreign nationals who have lived in the US for the three years immediately preceding the application deadline. Applicants must already hold their Ph.D. or have completed all requirements, except for the actual conferral of the degree, by the application deadline.

Announcement: The NYU Center for Ancient Studies is seeking to engage the work of current PhD candidates as part of our second round of video presentations in the Emerging Scholars Series. In this series, we aim to showcase research that takes innovative approaches to the study of the ancient world broadly conceived or that incorporates non-traditional materials and/or methods. We are also especially interested in highlighting the work of scholars from groups that are or have been historically marginalized and underrepresented in the field of ancient studies and in the academy at large. 

The format of the videos will feature individual PhD candidates who briefly describe their research and then engage in conversation with an NYU faculty member that positions this work in relation to broader scholarship. To submit a proposal, please send a short abstract (250 words or less) on your topic of research along with a current CV to: ancient.studies@nyu.edu. Proposals will be accepted on a rolling basis. Two UCLA PhD graduate students will be teaching an intensive introductory Ancient Greek language course (Greek 16) in person on UCLA’s campus. The course is 8 weeks long and is designed to cover the material usually taught in the first 3 quarters/first year of introductory Greek courses (Greek 1, 2, and 3 at UCLA). By the end of the course, students will be prepared to take intermediate level courses. No prior learning experience with Ancient Greek or any foreign language is required or assumed. The course will be open to college students regardless of their home institutions, and high school students that are interested in taking the course must be 15 years old or older by June 26, per UCLA's own policies. DEADLINE: MAY 31   This year's CANE Summer Institute will be held July 10-15, simultaneously in person at Rhode Island School of Design in Providence, with the support of the Brown University Department of Classics, and online via Zoom. For CSI's 40th anniversary, this year's theme is "Classical antiquity": a global phenomenon in local contexts. Faculty hailing from public and private educational institutions from all six New England states and beyond, representing disciplines across the humanities, will lead institute participants in a week of mini-courses, professional development workshops, and Greek and Latin reading groups, and deliver research talks as part of the week's free public lecture series, which take us to ancient and modern Egypt, England, Gandhara, Germany, North Africa, Numidia, Ireland, Italy, Syria, the Ukraine-Russia War, and the United States. Res Difficiles announces its fourth virtual conference! ResDiff4 : Difficult Conversations in Classics will offer a full day of talks on very relevant topics on March 24.

With the support of many organizations like CCA South, the National Committee for Latin and Greek has advocated for Greek and Latin programs for over 40 years and we are proud to be part of the advocacy that led to a new federal grant program. This one is for school districts that have a JROTC program or a connection to military bases or families. (We are currently working on a equivalent grant program for any public system, called World LEAP!) In its third year, the WLARA, World Language Advancement and Readiness Grants Program, is now accepting applications for FY23! The deadline to apply is April 7, 2023. This program supports the growth of learning opportunities that empower more students to become multilingual, globally prepared citizens. Your dedication and advocacy efforts over the past several years helped make this program a reality and continue its prioritization for funding!

Here is a pre-recorded technical assistance webinar provided by the Department of Defense Education Activity. The DoDEA seeks innovative proposals for the establishment, improvement, or expansion of world language programs targeting elementary and secondary students in order to enable successful students, as they advance from elementary school through secondary school, to achieve an advanced level of proficiency in those languages. Individual grant award will be a minimum of $500,000.00 and with a maximum of $2,000,000, for a period of up to five (5) years.
